The 30-Gram Rule
Under the Cannabis Act, adults can possess up to 30 grams of dried cannabis (or its equivalent) in public. This is a public possession limit — there is no federally specified limit for how much cannabis you can store at home, though provinces may impose additional restrictions.
The 30-gram limit applies to the total combined weight of all cannabis products you are carrying. Different product types convert to dried cannabis equivalents using a standardized chart.
Equivalency Chart
| Product | Equivalent to 1 g Dried | 30 g Limit Equivalent |
|---|---|---|
| Dried cannabis | 1 gram | 30 grams |
| Fresh cannabis | 5 grams | 150 grams |
| Edibles | 15 grams | 450 grams |
| Liquid products | 70 grams | 2,100 grams |
| Concentrates | 0.25 grams | 7.5 grams |
| Seeds | 1 seed | 30 seeds |
What This Means in Practice
Within your 30-gram dried equivalent limit, you could legally carry:
- 450 grams of edibles (about 30 standard packages)
- 7.5 grams of concentrates (shatter, rosin, live resin)
- 2,100 grams of liquid products (cannabis beverages)
- Or any combination that totals 30 grams dried equivalent
Gifting Cannabis
Adults can share up to 30 grams of dried cannabis (or equivalent) with other adults of legal age. The cannabis must come from a legal source. Selling cannabis without a license is illegal regardless of quantity.
At Home
The Cannabis Act does not specify a home possession limit. You can store legally purchased cannabis at your residence. However, you may also have product from up to 4 plants per household if you grow at home (where permitted). Provinces may have additional home storage requirements.
Provincial Variations
Provinces can add restrictions to the federal framework but cannot relax them. Key variations include:
- Quebec: Prohibits home cultivation entirely
- Manitoba: Lifted its home cultivation ban in May 2025
- All provinces: The 30-gram public possession limit is uniform nationwide
Exceeding the Limit
Possession of more than 30 grams in public is a criminal offence under the Cannabis Act. Penalties vary based on quantity but can include fines and imprisonment. For details on penalties, see our penalties page.
