Flying with Cannabis in Canada

Domestic flights allow up to 30 grams. International flights are an absolute no. Here's everything you need to know about cannabis and air travel in Canada.

Domestic Flights: Yes, With Limits

You can fly within Canada with up to 30 grams of dried cannabis (or equivalent) in both carry-on and checked luggage. This applies to all domestic flights between Canadian cities.

CATSA Security Screening

CATSA (Canadian Air Transport Security Authority) is focused on aviation security threats, not drug enforcement. Their screening process looks for weapons, explosives, and prohibited items — cannabis in legal quantities is not their concern.

Carry-On Rules

  • Dried flower, edibles, pre-rolls: No special restrictions beyond the 30-gram limit
  • Vape pen batteries: Must travel in carry-on (lithium battery rules)
  • Liquid cannabis products: Must follow the 100 mL container limit in carry-on
  • Cannabis oils: Containers over 100 mL must go in checked luggage

Checked Luggage

Cannabis products (within the 30-gram limit) can travel in checked luggage without restrictions on liquid container size. Vape batteries must always go in carry-on.

International Flights: Absolutely Not

Zero Tolerance on International Flights

It is illegal to fly internationally with cannabis — even between two countries where cannabis is legal. This includes flights to the US (all states), Mexico, Europe, and everywhere else. Penalties include up to 14 years imprisonment.

US Preclearance Areas

Several Canadian airports have US Preclearance facilities:

  • You pass through US Customs and Border Protection while still on Canadian soil
  • Some airports have disposal bins before the Preclearance zone
  • Having any cannabis product when entering Preclearance is a violation of US federal law

Provincial Differences at Airports

Remember that cannabis rules change when you land in a different province:

  • If you're 19 and fly from Ontario to Quebec, you're under Quebec's legal age of 21
  • Consumption rules at your destination may be different from your origin
  • The 30-gram possession limit remains consistent across all provinces
