The Birthplace of Canadian Cannabis Culture

British Columbia is where Canadian cannabis culture was born. American Vietnam War draft dodgers who settled in the Kootenays, Gulf Islands, and Fraser Valley in the 1960s and 70s brought cannabis cultivation to BC's remote valleys, where temperate climate, fertile soil, and mountain isolation created ideal growing conditions. BC Bud became a global brand decades before legalization.

Today, BC allows consumption wherever tobacco smoking is permitted, though Vancouver's municipal bylaws are stricter — parks and beaches are smoke-free zones with $250 fines.

Vancouver: Cannabis Capital of Canada

Vancouver remains the cannabis capital of Canada, home to the country's most established consumption venues:

  • New Amsterdam Cafe (301 West Hastings Street) — Operating since 1998, North America's premiere cannabis-friendly cafe featuring a BYOB consumption lounge with Volcano vaporizers and dab rigs. Received a National Cannabis Tourism Award in June 2025.
  • Cannabis Culture Lounge (303 West Hastings) — Founded by Marc Emery in 2001, offering two floors of smoking space with a dab bar, pool table, and $5 entry.
  • Coastal Green — Near the Art Gallery
  • La Canapa — On Main Street, sourcing from local legacy growers
  • City Cannabis — On Cambie, featuring a community Green Room

Canada High Tours operates dispensary tours, walking tours, and multi-format cannabis experiences. Cannabis delivery is available through Uber Eats in Vancouver.

Beyond Vancouver

  • Whistler: Approved cannabis retail in 2023, now has 5 dispensaries including THC Canada (described as the "Apple Store of weed") in Village North
  • Okanagan Valley: Pioneering cannabis-and-wine tourism through Okanagan Cannabis Tours ("Weed 'n' Wine" tours) and Say High to Okanagan Tours
  • Nelson: The spiritual birthplace of BC Bud (population ~10,000), home to the Touchstones Nelson Museum's "Grow Show" exhibition
  • Tofino: Surf culture and rainforest hiking with cannabis-friendly private cabin rentals
